Introducing CohabU: a series of local instructor- led crash course sessions on the latest technologies
CohabU is a series of local instructor- led crash course sessions on the latest technologies, intended to help you get familiar with a topic quickly, with targeted instruction. After six nights (over six weeks) at three hours each, you should be conversationally proficient with any professional in the field. Topics will cover design, application specific logic, and all aspects of modern software development.
Our first two classes are User Experience Design and Intro to Web Programming. Both are six week courses taught by local professionals working in the field. The cost for each course is $250. Scroll down for descriptions of each class as well as registration options.

CohabU: Web Design from 0 to 60 in 6 Weeks

If you need a website, but don't want the expense of paying someone to build and maintain it for you, CohabU has the solution.
In just six Monday nights, instructor David Eleuterius, owner of built by david, will show you how to create a professional (or fun, or crazy... whatever you're going for) website yourself using the Wordpress platform. With the completion of class time and out of class assignments, all students will be able to walk away with a functioning website of their own that they know how to update.
This class is designed for everyone from the beginner to anyone who wants to feel more comfortable building and maintaining a Wordpress website or blog. Each student is required to bring their own laptop (PC or Mac) with them to each class. Computers will not be provided.
Here are just some of the subjects the class will cover:
- Creating a Wordpress account and domain for your site
- Controlling how your visitors view and interact with your site
- Creating new pages and controlling their appearance
- Understanding, installing and using "widgets" and "plugins"
- Adding media (photos, videos, etc...) to your site
- Blogging
- Keeping your site fresh and up to date

Great user experience is a competitive advantage and can help drastically improve your existing web and mobile design.Understanding UX Design is quickly becoming an important skill to have as more and more employers and entrepreneurs enter the web and mobile space, and we're here to help jump start your foray into the amazing world of User Experience Design.
Beginning January 9th, Cohab is hosting a 6 week design course with Ken Hanson. He'll cover the introduction quickly, and get to the meat and potatoes of UX Design over 5 additional classes.
• Learn how to accurately define the problem that your designs will solve
• Understand how to create proper User Stories that let you deep dive into what a customer needs to accomplish
• Gain the skills necessary to create system maps that are both understandable and beautiful
• Learn how to step through an application's flow, and represent that in a way that your whole team can see
• Get right to sketching your very own idea's screens and learn how to use tools that Twin Engine Labs and others use daily
• Learn what is informational overkill and what is absolutely important to a UI design that will help graphic design flourish and execute your well thought out user designs
• Freebie: take the first steps in converting your wireframes to graphic designs with the Twin Engine Labs design team in a workshop that just can't be missed.
The first half of the classes will have a lecture, and the second half will be hands on critique and discussion based work.
This class will run every Monday from January 9th to February 13th (6 classes). The registration fee is $250.

Ken Hanson is a Shreveport, LA native and has developed his career for the last 7 years with both Dallas and San Francisco design agencies including Hot Studio, TrialPay, Mevio, PeopleClick, Match.com, and Telligent. His work includes big brand projects for EA Sports, Palm, Apple, Microsoft, Acura, Honda, People Magazine, and many more.
He currently runs the Twin Engine Labs design arm under the guise of Chief Creative Officer.
Intro to Web Programming
January 11th - February 15th

Web development has always been a little daunting, and we all had to start somewhere. However, with a little background on the core architectures, everyone agrees that development becomes dead simple.Beginning January 11, CoHab is hosting a 6 week crash course where instructor Cole Brand will teach you all the ins and outs of web programming. We'll cover a bit of ground, and fast, from the first webservers through to modern systems.
• Understand how requests are made and responses are served
• Understand how web sites actually respond to requests
• Explore how various web servers are configured and setup
• Be able to explain why various solutions are chosen for specific business needs
This class runs every Wednesday from January 11th to February 15th. The registration fee is $250. Programming experience is helpful, and having your own laptop is required (there will be some software for you to run locally to facilitate testing and experimentation), so bring both! Only 20 slots are available, so register now!

Cole Brand is a Shreveport, LA resident, transplanted by way of Houston from Atlanta GA, and an avid programmer and computer hobbyist. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science and has over 10 years in web development experience.
Cole currently works as a Software Developer for Electsolve Technology Solutions and Services in Shreveport and leads the local Techx20 braintrust social networking group.
